Description:
Jacket; part of women’s wedding costume As.1998.1.322 to 324. Base cloth of hand-woven cotton dyed mid-blue with indigo. Decorated on collar and front facing with base cloth of red brushed cotton and cross stitch in silk in yellow with white and some green, with two repeating patterns including heart shapes. Front top has rectangles of red cotton with spiralling design in yellow satin stitch with central circular motifs in purple, green and white. Below are rectangular panels and plain green and plain red silk cloth and deep blue cotton. At hem are fifteen layers of applique lines of cloth in red, white and black. Sleeves have cuff of wax resist in green and yellow. Back top has applied rectangle in red silk satin or sateen, embroidered in silk in satin stitch, predominately yellow with bright pink, green and blue. Design includes eight spiral motifs with borders.
