Description:
Jacket; part of girl’s festival costume As.1998.1.334 to 335. Base cloth inner layer of hand-woven cotton dyed dark indigo (was possibly once another jacket), with lining of black cotton. Decoration covers exterior of jacket in a folded silk technique in blue with lines of orange, pink, pale green, white and black, divided by lines of narrow bands. All intermediate surfaces covered by bought silk figured satin in an aubergine colour. The main motifs are symmetrical divisions of squares.

Comments:Folded silk technique: pieces of bought ribbon or silk are stiffened, the cloth then cut into small rectangles, folded over at the top at sides to make a triangle, and applied by stitching through the points. On many jackets, bird and fish motifs are common. This jacket was bought from and made by a woman who was at least sixty years old.Text from Corrigan 2001: 51: taijiang county, qiandongnan prefecture. Female Festive Jacket. Collared jacket with central front opening. The neck and front facing is continuous, widening towards the bottom on the left side. The jacket has an inner and an outer layer. The inner layer is hand-woven cotton dyed dark indigo, and the outer one is a figured satin in an aubergine colour. The decorative areas consist of starched silk rectangles, folded into triangles and stitched through the points.
