Description:
An under-jacket (sleeveless); part of monk’s (‘abbot’s’?) attire. Made from many pieces of dark red twill woven wool cloth, fulled. Centre front opening, overlapping panel [20 cms wide] lined with pink/red cotton cloth; hangs below front hemline (faded). Three different styles of brocaded cloths stitched to upper front and back of under-jacket; pleated under and at back of sleeve openings; small-scale diamond patterning (yellow silk and silver metal-wrapped thread), flower and foliage patterning, with two small swastikas (silver metal-wrapped thread on lilac satin silk ground); and polychrome floral patterning (gold metal-wrapped thread). Red wool flap covering shoulders piped with blue silk (?) braiding. Ground unevenly dyed; dyed in the piece? Some holes in woollen cloth.
