Comments:This monochrome painting represents Zhang’s early style. Zhang sketches the figure of the scholar and the bamboo in fine and fluent lines with a dry brush. The rock is depicted in broad and nuanced washes. The inscription claims that the bamboo was added a few years later. Due to the interruption in the process of creation, this is one of his more casual works. A painting by Zhang with a similar composition dated 1934 is in the National Gallery in Prague.
