Comments:Rendered in masterly whirled brushstrokes and contrasting light effects, this landscape reflects the spectacular mountain scenery in Sichuan that Fu may have seen from his Studio at the Foot of the Mountain (Xiashan zhai) next to the Diamond Cliffs in the western suburbs of Chongqing. In 1940s Fu Baoshi met Geoffrey Hedley (d.1958), a representative of the British Council, who was based in China from 1946-52. Having supported many struggling artists, Hedley later bequeathed five paintings from his collection to the British Museum. Among the paintings selected by the museum was this mountain scene.
