Comments:Rose Balsam is composed of swift firm strokes in blue, black outlines indicating leaves, and cursory pink dots depicting blossoms. The shrub rises in two diagonals into the picture plane. The composition is inspired by Qi’s practice of seal carving, which requires good judgment in composing clear cuts onto a small square area. Qi’s simple and expressive style and his depictions of subject matter from daily life, often imbued with a sense of humour, have gained him national and international acclaim.
