Comments:Landscape in Blue and Green features a spectacular mountain scene illuminated by a rushing waterfall. The landscape appears to be inspired by the splashed ink technique (pomo) of the Tang dynasty (618-906), Western Abstract Expressionism, and Zhang’s studies of textile dyeing in Kyoto. Zhang developed his style of bold impressionistic washes in brilliant greens and blues in the 1960s after an eye operation that left him with impaired vision. In 1964 Zhang exhibited some of his works in Cologne and a year later he held a show in the Grosvenor Gallery in London. Landscape in Blue and Green is dated to summer 1964 and dedicated to Basil Gray (1904-89) who was Keeper of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum from 1946 to 1969.
