Comments:The Northern Qi received direct influence on their sculpture from India and Persia. Northern Qi rulers were devout Buddhists and the sculptures commissioned in this period have broad shoulders and oval faces. Bodhisattvas such as this Guanyin figure are remarkable for their finely carved jewellery and court-style dress. Originally the sculpture would have been painted in realistic colours – white, pink, black, and blue , gold foil was also used. For more information on Northern Qi sculpture see Ann Paludan, Chinese Sculpture: A Great Tradition, Chicago 2006
