Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1550-1600 (circa)
Materials:earthenware
Technique:glazed, slipped, painted, pierced,
Subjects:servant/domestic worker
Dimensions:Height: 21 centimetres
Description:
Green-and-amber-glazed earthenware funerary model of a female servant. Made in the same way as BM 1937.0716.113 and dressed in an identical costume, this figure is modelled with her right hand covered by her sleeve. Her left hand is held in front of her sash and is pierced as if it originally held the shaft of some implement such as a fan or parasol, perhaps fashioned in wood and no longer surviving. Traces of the slip and pigments once used to adorn the figure’s face lend a greater reality to the model. Pink flesh tones cover the cheeks, while her eyes and eyebrows are painted black, her lips scarlet, and her black-painted hair is piled into a three-part bun. Once decapitated, the head has long ago been reattached.
