Comments:BodhisattvasWoodChina, about 900–1100These two bodhisattvas, enlightened beings, wereprobably part of a large group of wooden figurescentred on one of the principle Buddhas of theMahayana pantheon – perhaps Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light. They were notconceived as individual works of art but as part ofa set of sculptures for display in a temple wherethey played a role in illustrating the Buddhistuniverse. The two sculptures were originallybrightly coloured.Purchased with the assistance of The Art FundAsia 1987,1221.1-2
