Comments:See von Schroeder 1981 (p. 514) for an extensive bibliography for this piece. Zwalf 1985According to the inscription, this was one of forty-eight bronzes commissioned by Zhou Fu to repay the four kindnesses (of mother, father, Tathagata and the teaching of the Doctrine). The right hand is in ‘vitarka mudrā’, and, as can be seen from another bronze, in the Nitta Collection, Tokyo, so was the left; together these ‘mudrās’ are associated with the ‘jieyin Fo’, Amitabha coming to receive souls into the Western Paradise. This manifestation (Japanese ‘raigō’) is frequently shown in Kamakura-period paintings and sculpture, which the bronze resembles stylistically.
