An image of the Wheel of the Law or the Doctrine (Dharmacakra). Made of silver, gilt copper and semi-precious stones: consists of twelve spokes, inlaid with turquoise and coral, a three-leaved hub of coral, turquoise and lapis, and a silver surround rising on a gilt foliate stalk from a lotus pedestal.

Comments:Zwalf 1985The wheel, an ancient symbol of sovereignty adopted by Buddhism also to represent the Doctrine, had a long life. It appears in Tibet, flanked by deer, over the Lhasa Jo-Khang, or cathedral, and as altar furniture where it can be part of a set of the Universal Monarch’s attributes. This wheel consists of twelve spokes, inlaid with turquoise and coral, a three-leaved hub of coral, turquoise and lapis which symbolises constant change, and a silver surround rising on a gilt foliate stalk from a lotus pedestal.
