‘Blanc de chine’ figure of a popular god with transparent glaze. This figure of a popular god is modelled standing a on a swirling cloud base. His hands are clasped together and feet splayed apart. His eyes are bulging and he frowns. He is dressed in military costume with boots, armour and a loose robe over the top, around which he wears a wide girdle secured by a belt at the front. He also wears a compact hat with ribbons tied together at the top of his head. Unusually, his sleeves are also tied individually, to prevent them flapping. His chin, the area above his lips and sideburn area are pierced for the addition of real hair beard, moustache and sideburn whiskers. The ears are both pierced to allow for the escape of gasses during firing to prevent cracking in the kiln. Inside the figure is hollow but a plug of clay has been inserted to fill up most of the hollow before glazing with a yellow-tinged glaze. Possibly the figure represents Guandi, the popular God of War (see BM 1938.0524.27).
