Emperor Ningzong of the Song Dynasty (1162-1232) did not know his family name. When he was young, he went to the palace with his adoptive mother and acted as a drama actress. Because she was loved by the Empress Dowager Wu, she was given to Ningzong, and she made great progress. Among the courtiers, Yang Cishan was famous. The empress recognized him as her elder brother and called him Sister Yang. Although she was born in a humble family, Empress Yang was knowledgeable, good at poetry and painting. Her calligraphy style was similar to that of Ning Zong, and she used to write for her.
