- Description:
During the Five Dynasties and the Northern Song Dynasty, landscape paintings with the theme of cold forest appeared in the north. Li Cheng (919-967), the representative of the Five Dynasties, was the first one. His paintings were characterized by “bleak weather, clear smoke forest, sharp edge and subtle ink technique”. However, the “Cold Forest” painted by Li Shi is mostly a close-up painting of pines and dead trees. This painting is a wide and distant landscape, with frost and snow, and ancient pines and trees standing upright in the foreground. The two travelers drive the donkey to the ferry. In the painting, waterlogging is used to set off the cold of frost. Judging from the Cun dye and crab claw like dead branches of the slope stone, it should be the work of the painters of Guo Xi after the Southern Song Dynasty.
