Calligraphy, made in black ink on paper, bearing two short poems about a pair of water buffalo in classical Chinese. One of them reads as follows: “I’ve watched them carefully, I know their tastes… / When I take them out, they know they will get just what they want. / As the sun goes down we plod leisurely homewards along the dyke, / enjoying the evening breeze. / I know that I’m really too old to be riding facing backwards / and eating lotus seeds like a country boy, / But kindly don’t spoil my pleasure by laughing at me”.

Comments:Barrass 2002:During the Cultural Revolution, Wang Shixiang was sent to a ‘cadre school’ south of Wuhan, in central China. He was given the task of looking after a pair of water buffalo, which soon became one of the great pleasures of his rural existence, inspiring him to write four short poems. This piece of calligraphy bears two of them.
