Comments:Barrass 2002:No original calligraphy has survived by Wang Xizhi, but among the few good copies of his work were two short letters that had been in Japan since the seventh century. The lack of import in the letters content is more than compensated for by the extraordinary quality of their brushwork, which the artist has captured beautifully in his rendering of them.Few twentieth-century calligraphers have matched Shen Yinmo’s skill in using a brush. He has a masterful knowledge of the qualities of different types of brushes, of mixes of ink and water, and above all of the effects that could be achieved by changing the speed, pressure and direction of the brush. His understanding of ink and brush enabled him to imbue his work with a rare delicacy of tone. He once said of Chinese calligraphy that ‘whitout sound, it has the rythm of music; without colour, it acquires the beauty of painting’. This piece of work bears out that description and has been widely admired for the elegance of the characters, that seem to dance accross the paper.
