- Description:
There is no title on the painting. There are three apes with different fur colors on the sturdy trunk, with different postures, leaning forward, looking down, or looking back, teasing the three egrets respectively. Three apes sound the same as “three yuan”. The ancient imperial examinations were divided into three levels. Those who could get the first place at all levels could be called “three yuan and”. The egret is synonymous with the word “Lu”, which is used to congratulate on the achievement of fame and fortune. There are other branches and leaves similar to osmanthus around Gugan, which may also echo the auspicious and rich atmosphere in the painting. The original title was Yi Yuanji, a famous ape painter in the Song Dynasty, but from the perspective of painting style, it should be a work of Ming people.
