Comments:Possibly north-eastern or eastern China, c.3000BC-2000BC. This large jade is more likely a tablet than an axe. It has a smoothly worked cutting edge and a slightly convex form tapering to the top, where there is a small hole drilled from both sides. The surface is polished smooth and shows off the very fine stone. An axe of approximately comparable shape, but with a different form of hole, has come from Changqing xian in Shandong province. See Rawson 1995, p.170, cat.no.10.2. The biconvex axe gently tapering towards the butt end exhibits sloping edges along the sides, butt and cutting edges. A biconical perforation is near the butt end. Neolithic. Length 288mm.
