Comments:Rawson 1995:In the case of the axe, the Erlitou period was obviouslyu a time of experiment. Several quite distinct shapes are found. The most innovative, however, was the combination of disc and notched axe seen in this piece. While it is possible that this axe type emerged from a modified disc, it may also simply have taken its form from two separate sources. In either case, the combination of the features of a disc with those of an axe probably served to strengthen the ceremonial rather than the functional properties of the blade. This piece, for example, is extremely thin and almost circular, reinforcing the message that they were entirely ceremonial, non-functional items.
