Peony is one of Xu Wei’s favorite flowers. Xu Wei’s large impressionistic peony is unprecedented. He does not use color, but only uses splash-ink. Both flower heads and leaves are made of large amount of dots, and only branches and veins are drawn with lines. This peony flower head is made by dipping the petals with ink. The inner end of the petals is deep and the outer end is shallow, and the middle part of the flower head is shallow and the periphery is deep. After the flower heads are nodded, use heavy ink to dot the stamens while they are wet. The whole work, regardless of its layout and ink, is bold and unrestrained.
