Xu Beihong painted thousands of unrestrained European horses during his trip to Europe in the 1920s. In the late 1930s, when he was lecturing at the International University of India, he visited Kashmir in the west of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Darjeeling Mountains in the foothills of the Himalayas. He was deeply touched by the wild horses high and fierce on the plateau. From then on, Xu Beihong’s horses not only possessed beautiful posture, but also possessed courageous vitality and tenacious endurance. “Their bodies are thin and long, not as fat as the horses painted by ancient Chinese masters such as Cao Ba, Chen Hong, Han Gan, Zhang Xuan, and Zhao Mengfu, but they are not lacking in vigor.”. Their nostrils are very open, indicating that they have a large vital capacity and are good at running for a long time. Their long legs and broad hooves indicate their agility and quickness in running.
