In his early paintings, Fu Baoshi tended to use the style of Gu Kaizhi, a painter of the Jin Dynasty, preferring to use fine, round and vigorous strokes in pursuit of ancient and unsophisticated interests. Later, he drew on the creative experience of Chen Hongshou, a painter of the late Ming Dynasty, and Shi Tao, a painter of the early Qing Dynasty, to permeate each other, ultimately forming an artistic face that was unrestrained, yet not lacking in sophistication, and elegant, yet containing deep meanings
Wine often inspires Fu Baoshi in his paintings. Every time he drinks, his brushwork wanders and his style is wanton, and his passion is filled. On the paper, magnificent masterpieces emerge endlessly. The words “often drunk after drinking” used in his seal should be a true portrayal of his painting. Due to his love for wine, his characters are often portrayed as gentlemen in drink – Tao Yuanming of the Jin Dynasty. In 1935, during his study abroad in Japan, he held his first solo exhibition and exhibited the “Yuan Ming Gu Jiu Tu”. Afterwards, he successively drew several similar compositions, and this painting is one of them. On the picture, Yuanming, with a clear and leisurely spirit, walked leisurely and thoughtfully, while the boy behind him followed his master with a wine bottle on his back, respectfully. In the drawing, only the characters are depicted and the background is omitted, achieving the creative purpose of highlighting the main body. The character’s modeling is almost exaggerated, presenting a graceful and natural flavor. The color is light and the artistic conception is quiet and scattered. Although there is not much ink, it can express the attitude of the master and servant, which is precisely the success of the painter
