[Xu Beihong’s Flying Eagle Painting Axis]
The Flying Eagle Painting Axis, modern and contemporary, painted by Xu Beihong, paper based, colored, 106.9 cm vertically and 35.6 cm horizontally
Self title: “Breathe into the sky and dance like a dragon. Defy the sun and moon, encourage the wind and clouds to anger. Don’t harbor hunger, intimidate the weak and fear. On the winter day of Bingxu, Beihong lived in Peiping.” The seal of “The Painting of Beihong” was printed by Zhu Wenfang
The year of Bingxu was 1946, and Xu Beihong was 51 years old
In the upper half of this picture, there is only a fluttering eagle, with a wide, alert, alert, and alert eye. Its claws are thick and long, like a blade, showing a ferocious manner. The whole painting is thoroughly inked, bringing the intensity, dryness, and wetness of the ink to the extreme. The extended wings of the eagle were first stun with a light ink wet brush, followed by a thick ink painting of the protruding feathers. The thick ink lines increased the thickness of the wings, demonstrating the soaring momentum and powerful power of the eagle in striking the sky
The three lines on the right side of the lower half are part of the picture, making up for the lack of reality above and emptiness below, maintaining the integrity and stability of the entire composition, and demonstrating the author’s style of writing in his later years: the combination of punctuation and painting on the Wei stele, and the natural but not out of line characteristics of the characters. At the same time, it also complements the pictorial meaning in the form of five-character poetry, highlighting the theme of the creation. In June 1946, Chiang Kai shek brazenly launched a civil war despite the opposition of the entire people. In July, Kuomintang agents assassinated progressive figures Li Gongpu and Wen Yiduo in Kunming, which filled Xu Beihong with righteous indignation. This picture expresses his wish that the people of the whole country rise up against Chiang Kai-shek and quell the civil war.
