Chen Shizeng Li Chrysanthemum Map Axis

[Chen Shizeng’s Painting Axis of Li Ju]

The Painting Axis of Li Ju, in modern times, is painted by Chen Shizeng, in paper, with colors, 136.9 centimeters vertically and 33.2 centimeters horizontally
The caption on the left side of the painting reads: “A small matter happened at the yellow chrysanthemum pass by the fence, and the green mountains outside the window are not worldly. Heng Ke.” With the seal of “Shi Zeng”
The picture depicts a chrysanthemum bamboo hedge. Chrysanthemums are colored with freehand brushstrokes and highlighted with ink leaves. From the perspective of painting, it combines the elegance of Chen Chun with the richness of Wu Changshuo. Tao Yuanming’s poetry and artistic conception of “Picking chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge and leisurely seeing the southern mountains” have attracted countless literati in later generations. Chen Shizeng depicted his indifferent literati mentality with sparse scenery and concise brushwork in this painting.
