During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, Ji Kang, Ruan Ji, Shan Tao, Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian, and Wang Rong were often gathered under the bamboo forest of Shanyang (now Henan Province for martial arts), indulging in drunkenness and drunkenness, and were left behind, so they were known as the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest”. Most of them are arrogant and nihilistic, despise etiquette and laws, have a generous nature, and are highly respected and admired by outsiders. The seven sages of the bamboo forest, represented by Ruan Ji and Ji Kang, experienced more ups and downs than ordinary people during the Wei and Jin dynasties. Their different secular moral essays and lifestyles profoundly influenced the literary style, social style, and scholarly style of the two Jin dynasties. Since the Wei and Jin dynasties, painters have often incorporated their images into paintings to express their recognition of the seven people’s way of life, personality, and pursuit of life
This picture depicts a beautiful and charming bamboo grove. The seven sages traveled during the period, either talking about books and essays, or meditating on the soul, or closing their eyes to nourish their spirit, with various postures and a natural presence. Bamboo is used in light ink to draw a clear and graceful atmosphere. Instead of using the usual thin lines to outline the clothing pattern, a slightly thicker brush path is used to write it quickly. The painter meticulously conceived the narrow and long paper with seven people arranged in a neat and natural way
