Axis of the Painting of Vase and Chrysanthemum, in the eighth year of the reign of the Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1882), painted in the empty valley on paper, with colors, 126.2 centimeters vertically and 57.7 centimeters horizontally
This picture is a sketch of autumn chrysanthemum in a bottle. The composition is ingenious and skillfully set. The high and low bottles and pots, and the “S” shaped autumn chrysanthemum make the picture vibrant and form multi-level rhythmic changes. With elegant and fresh colors and flexible and skillful brushwork, it is a masterpiece of flower painting in Xu Gu’s later years
The inscription on this drawing reads: “Ren Wu Winter Moon was written in Ruilian Jingshe and Xu Gu.” It is stamped with the words “Xu Gu Calligraphy and Painting” and “37 Feng Thatched Cottage” by Zhu Wenyin. “Ren Wu” was in the eighth year of Guangxu’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1882), when Xu Gu was 60 years old.
