[Guang Embroidery Flower and Bird Bogu Screen]

Guang Embroidery Flower and Bird Bogu Screen, late Qing Dynasty, 40cm vertically and 51cm horizontally
This inset red sandalwood block is inlaid with a multicolored mother-of-pearl frame. The screen center is made of white plain iron and embroidered with flowers, birds, and ancient designs. The pattern is divided into two layers, with the theme of flowers, birds, plants, and insects in the middle, and the outer layer of Bogu patterns as a lining. The patterns are delicate and dense. The colors are mainly brown, brown, camel, and beige, with red, green, black, white, and gold colors matching, which are both soft and elegant, and bright and rich. In addition to straight needles, twisting needles, and laying needles, there are also complex needle techniques such as sprinkling and inserting needles, with extremely fine broken threads and even and thin stitches
Guangxiu is famous for its colorful and exquisite embroidery. In the Qing Dynasty, Guangxiu was produced in workshops, mostly by men, and is rare among other embroidery types. This screen insert is a display on a court case in the late Qing Dynasty. After the embroidery is completed, the back of the embroidery is lined with a frame made of wooden strips, and dozens of threads are used to stretch the embroidery onto the wooden frame, making the picture smooth and not deformed, and then inlaid into a red sandalwood frame
There is a list of “Guangdong Caiyuan Brand” attached to the back of the screen insert, which is sandwiched in the back panel. The owner of Caiyuan Embroidery Manor, He Zhuzhai, introduced the address of Caiyuan, the variety and texture of the embroidery products operated, the destination of the embroidery products, and the business philosophy. This “advertisement” is a valuable historical material for studying Guangxiu in the late Qing Dynasty.
