The Emperor Qianlong, who was about 40 years old, dressed as a leisure high scholar, enjoyed tea and horses in the pavilion of carved beams and painted rafters. Horse is one of the important means of transportation for Emperor Qianlong. He always brings a good horse and a fast horse to ride whenever he goes out to inspect various places or to hunt in autumn clothes. So when there are good stallions in various regions, especially in the nomad regions, they offer them to the court to invite favours. Emperor Qianlong attached great importance to the horses presented, not only carefully domesticating them, but also ordering court painters to paint them as a permanent memorial
When he was young, Giuseppe Castiglione received systematic and strict painting training and was the most important horse painter in the Qing Palace. “His paintings of horses, whether they were drawn from real horses in accordance with imperial edicts, or created based on his own observations, include both forms and spirits, which are inseparable from his rigorous Western anatomy and solid sketching skills.”. The wide variety of trees and steep mountains in the picture should be painted by Chinese court painters. The lush trees and open waters, as well as the vast mountains, reflect each other, revealing the rhythm of density changes. At the same time, they vividly demonstrate the quiet and humid countryside in summer. From the perspective of the picture, the mountains and stones in the background should have been created by the Chinese court painter Jin Tingbiao
This picture is a stickdown style decoration, surrounded by a blue silk border, with a heavy stain on the painting center. It should be painted and pasted in a palace or a hall for the Emperor Qianlong to watch at any time
