[Dong Bangda’s Painting Axis of Emperor Qianlong’s Pine Shade for Summer Relieving]
The axis of “The Painting of Emperor Qianlong’s Pine Shade for Summer Relieving”, painted by Dong Bangda during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, in paper and ink, 193.5 centimeters vertically and 158 centimeters horizontally
Author’s Note: “Written by Chen Bangda Gong.” The lower seal is “Chen Bangda Seal”, with the seal of Bai Wenfang, and “Literary Servant”, with the seal of Zhu Wenfang. Emperor Qianlong wrote a poem: “The world is empty and the bottom is serious, and clearly two sentences are difficult to relate to. The most esteemed person is the first to be anxious and hardworking. In the dream, I wrote a unique portrait, which was also recorded by Xia Wu, the son of Jia, and then written by Qinghui Pavilion, the son of Yi, and the son of Ji Xia.” The next seal is “Xu Zhong Cheng Zhao”, with the seal of Zhu Wenfang, and “Qian Long Chen Han”, with the seal of Bai Wenfang. “Jia Zi” is the ninth year of Qianlong (1744), when Emperor Qianlong was 34 years old; “Yi Chou” was in the 10th year of Qianlong (1745), when Emperor Qianlong was 35 years old. The seal on the painting includes the seals of the Qing Dynasty’s Inner Government and the Emperor Qianlong: “Summer Resort” Zhu Wenfang seal, “Chengguan” Zhu Wenfang seal, “Painting Practice Plain” Bai Wenoval seal, and “Cultivating Spirituality” Zhu Wenfang seal
The picture depicts the scene of Emperor Qianlong, dressed in Han costume, sitting beside a stone table on the outskirts of lofty mountains and gurgling streams, watching a boy cooking tea. In addition to the tea cups, there are also stringed instruments and books on the stone table, demonstrating his cultural cultivation beyond the tea ceremony. This painting is ingeniously conceived. The author did not paint the Emperor Qianlong, who was regarded as the Son of Heaven, as tall and bulky, but incorporated him into the natural landscape. Then, through the composition of mountains surrounded by water and pines, he naturally placed it in the center of the painting, highlighting his personal image and supreme imperial status. The structure of the mountains and stones in the picture is complex and scattered, with sharp strokes and delicate texturing techniques. They have both the charm of the Yuan Dynasty and the craftsmanship of the Song Dynasty, thus successfully rendering the quiet and elegant environment of a paradise. The portrait of Emperor Qianlong in the actual painting should be the hand of Giuseppe Castiglione
There is a yellow label affixed to the head of this painting scroll with the title “Hanging on the east wall of the East Pavilion in the Chengguan Zhai Hall to the west”, indicating that this painting was once hung in the Chengguan Zhai Hall in the Summer Resort as an interior decoration painting
