Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter Poems by Kesi

[Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter Poetry Volume of Kesi]

Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter Poetry Volume of Kesi, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, 37 centimeters vertically and 188 centimeters horizontally
The scroll consists of four volumes. On the beige ground, four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter are respectively taped and woven with blue silk threads. Each volume is in the form of a “cong” rhyme, modeled on the “Twenty Songs of Spring” by Yuan Weizhi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, and 20 five-character poems are each composed, chanting the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The content of each volume is different, but the form is the same. For example, there are 20 pieces of Spring Festival, which describe the changes in natural phenomena such as celestial phenomena and solar terms, and then describe people’s related activities, such as writing Spring Festival couplets, awarding gifts, observing the New Year, setting off firecrackers, offering sacrifices, singing praises to the emperor’s grace, and relieving disasters. The verse is beautiful and the writing is smooth
In the spring, summer, autumn, and winter poetry volumes, the “minister Jiang Sheng Jing Shu” is woven at the end of each volume, and the “minister” and “sheng” are woven under the Zhu Wenyin. Jiang Sheng, with the name Guangyu, was born in Yuanhe, Jiangsu Province, and served as a scholar during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. He was once a servant of the Ministry of Punishment and a governor of Hunan Province. These four volumes of poetry were written by him and woven by a tapestry artist. The tapestry is neatly woven, using flat tapestry and overlapping tapestry. The text structure is rigorous, the strokes are calm and rounded, regular but not rigid, vigorous and beautiful, demonstrating the superb tapestry techniques of tapestry artists.
