The character in the painting, the Imperial Concubine of Hui Xian (? 1745), is the daughter of Gao Bin, the governor of the river. During the reign of Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty, he was elected to the Hongli Fan Mansion as Fang Fujin. In the second year of Qianlong’s reign (1737), he was canonized as a royal concubine. She was gentle, virtuous, reasonable, and devoted herself to serving the emperor. When Emperor Qianlong was worried that farmers would not be able to plant land or harvest grain due to floods and droughts, and was in a depressed mood, she always accompanied the emperor and gently comforted him. She also often used the words and deeds of ancient women with noble moral character to demand herself, from the prince’s side of the Fujin to the emperor’s imperial concubine, for twenty years as one day. Therefore, she was deeply respected and loved by Emperor Qianlong. In the tenth year of Qianlong’s reign (1745), when he died of illness, he was posthumously granted the title of “Huixian”, which is the highest praise for his lifelong conduct, and was awarded the title of “Empress”
