This work was woven for the imperial palace by Suzhou weavers in strict accordance with the Tibetan Buddhist painting manuscript. “On the fifth day of November in the forty sixth year of Qianlong’s reign, the emperor ordered Zhang Jia Hu Tu Ke Tu to recognize and worship the Secret Buddha of the Benefit Yang Body (Dense Vajra).”
The dense diamond body has a bluish black color, three sides, a center bluish black color, a right side white color, and a left side red color. In the middle of the auspicious clouds in the sky, there are four Buddhist ancestors on both sides, one is the Indian Dragon Tree Master, and the other is the three masters of the Kadang Sect, the Sakya Sect, and the Gelug Sect. The entire picture of this image adopts the technique of “breaking the warp and weft”, and interweaves the warp and weft with colored silk to create a picture. It has both a painting style and the bright and beautiful characteristics of silk fabrics. As early as the Yuan Dynasty, the Suzhou and Hangzhou regions began to weave and embroider Thangkas for Tibet. The tapestry Buddha statue is one of the most precious varieties of Thangkas.
