[Double layer box with carved red falling flower fish inlaid with jade chime]
Double layer box with carved red falling flower fish inlaid with jade chime, Qianlong, Qing Dynasty, height 14 cm, caliber 20.9 cm. The old collection of the Qing Palace
The box is double layered, shaped like a chime, and painted with red paint throughout. The box wall is carved with a picture of falling flowers and carp playing in the water. The cover is inlaid with jasper, and the carved patterns are the same as the box wall. The device type and patterns combine to convey the meaning of “auspicious and abundant”. The box is connected to a shaped seat, with Ruyi’s cloud head and feet. The bottom of the seat is painted with black paint, and the center knife is engraved with gold in regular script “made in the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty.”
This box is finely carved, with water waves like silk. Its carving techniques and themes such as falling flowers, flowing water, and changes in fish and dragons are in the style of Suzhou lacquer carving during the Qianlong period
