[Picture axis of Emperor Giuseppe Castiglione and other emperors of Qianlong shooting wolves]
The scroll set is pasted with an old label, which reads “March auspicious day in the seventh year of Qianlong”. In the seventh year of the Qianlong reign (1742), Emperor Qianlong was 32 years old. The seal of Emperor Qianlong’s “Treasure of Eight Symbols and Eight Concepts”, “Treasure of Five Blessings and Five Dynasties Hall”, and “Treasure of the Supreme Emperor” are collected
This picture is one of a series of works on hunting tours painted by court painters under the command of Emperor Qianlong. The picture is drawn in a paddock with picturesque mountains and clear waters, and the layers of forest are stained with dye. Emperor Qianlong alone clapped his horse and galloped quickly. As indicated by the arrow, a fleeing wolf could be seen. The whole picture is extremely dynamic and full of vitality
In the picture, the Emperor Qianlong and the white horse under his crotch should be painted by the Western painter Giuseppe Castiglione in the palace. He uses exquisite techniques to show the confident look and skillful posture of the Emperor Qianlong. Although the Emperor Qianlong’s arrow is still on the bow, he can still feel the consequences of the wolf drinking the arrow and dying in a moment. Giuseppe Castiglione described the bloody ending as easy and without suspense. The mountains, rocks, and trees in the picture were painted by Chinese court painters. The traditional “scatter perspective” method was used in the setting, organically combining height, distance, and depth, thereby expanding the limited scene into an open stage for horse racing and hunting
Although the artistic styles of Eastern and Western painting with different characteristics are not very unified in the same painting, they are an organic blend of Chinese and Western cultures, which is also a major feature of the court painting of the Qianlong Dynasty
