  • Dynasty: Tang dynasty
  • Category: Paintings
  • Author: 范瓊
  • Form:
  • Exhibition dimension: 67.3×39.9
  • Description:
Guanyin Bodhisattva wears a crown, in which Amitabha is painted, and sits on a green lotus platform. He has three eyes, forty-two hands, and an eye is drawn in the middle of each hand, which is a type of Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes Guanyin (also called Great Compassion Guanyin) in Esoteric Buddhism. On the lower right side of this painting is the inscription of Fan Qiong (active from August 46 to August 79). Although both the Qing Dynasty’s surveyors and Zhang Chou thought it was an authentic work of Fan Qiong, the shape of the goddess of mercy is different from that of the Tang Dynasty’s male goddess of mercy, but it is closer to that of the Ming Dynasty, so it is speculated that it may be a painting of the Ming Dynasty.
