- Description:
When Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty (626-649) was the King of Qin, there were eighteen civilian advisers in his mansion. After he ascended the throne, he ordered Yan Liben, a palace painter (active in the late seventh century), to draw images. It is speculated that the earliest image of the Eighteen Scholars should be similar to the figure of Lingyan Pavilion’s meritorious officials, that is, the figures stand in rows without background description, with identification and praise written beside them. This painting takes the form of this ancient picture, but both the silk and the brush show that it should be made after the Ming Dynasty.
