Rhinoceros Horn Carved Pine Yin Kaoshitu Cup

[Rhinoceros Horn Carved Pine Yin Kao Tu Cup]

Rhinoceros Horn Carved Pine Yin Kao Tu Cup, late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, height 9.1 cm, caliber 15.4 × 10.2 cm
The cup is dark brown, open and bottomed. This cup uses the wide and thick shape of Asian rhinoceros horn to cut off the horn tip and invert it, like an inverted peak rock. The cup takes the reclusive scholar as the theme, and depicts the high mountains and gullies, pine trees and streams on the outer wall of rhinoceros horn. This cup combines the natural shape of rhinoceros horn itself, and ingeniously carves an ancient pine as the cup handle. Its pine branches extend up to the cup mouth, and the pine leaves are flat as a wheel. Under the ancient pines, an old man wearing a long-sleeved shirt, a bun on his head, and a beard hanging over his chest sat cross-legged. In front of the old man, the stream was rippling, and a cluster of autumn chrysanthemums grew on the rocks by the stream. This cup is dignified and simple in shape, simple in decoration, and the layout of through-view makes the scenery picturesque and full of charm. On the inner wall of the cup, the ravine of the mountain wall is carved to the bottom of the cup, and the stream is extended to make the rippling water extend into the ravine. The scenery of this cup echoes inside and outside, and the carving technique is exquisite, which vividly depicts the leisure feelings and ambitions of reclusive scholars. It is a masterpiece of rhinoceros horn carving in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties
