The Palace Museum has many paintings of Yin Zhen (Prince Yong) dressed as or interacting with Taoists. This picture is one of them. The painter of this picture is unknown. In the picture, Yin Zhen, dressed in Taoist costume, is sitting with bent legs near the trunk of a tree, talking with a Taoist
Yin Zhen ordered the imperial painter to paint himself as a Taoist to show his detached mood, which may also contain the hope of seeking the protection of the Taoist god and prolonging life. Yinzhen was the most Taoist emperor among the emperors of the Qing Dynasty. When he was a prince, he became interested in Taoist medicine stone and wrote the poem “Burning Pills”: “Lead sand and medicine, pine and cypress surround the cloud altar. The furnace transports yin and yang fire, and the power is both internal and external elixirs. The light rushes and shines, and the spirit guards the dragon flat. He feels that the immortal fetus is hot, and the sky signs fall purple Luan.” It can be seen that he has considerable interest and research in refining pills
According to the records of the Qing Palace archives, he once placed the Taoist rune board in the main palaces such as the Hall of Supreme Harmony and the Qianqing Palace; Set up a Dou altar in the Heart Cultivation Hall of the dormitory; Build houses in the Imperial Garden for Taoists to live in; In Suzhou, he ordered Taoist vests, and sent secret Zhu edicts to his close ministers, such as Tian Wenjing, the governor of Hedong, Li Wei, the governor of Zhejiang, and asked them to recommend good doctors and magicians to him: “You can pay attention to visit, there are good doctors inside and outside, and people who have profound cultivation of life, or Taoists, or Confucian laymen who preach…” Jia Shifang, who is known as the immortal, Lou Jinyuan, who was named Miaoying, and Taoists such as Zhang Taixu and Wang Dinggan, were called into the palace. They built furnaces to refine pills in the Yuanmingyuan, and won the favor of the emperor with different prescriptions. Emperor Yongzheng has taken pills for many times. Many experts speculated that the sudden death of Emperor Yongzheng in the Yuanmingyuan at the age of 58 (1735) was directly related to taking pills.
