Jinnong self-portrait axis

[Jinnong Self-portrait Axis]

Self-portrait axis, Jinnong’s work, paper book, ink brush, 131.3 cm vertically and 59.1 cm horizontally
This picture is a self-portrait of Jinnong, one of the eight monsters in Yangzhou, at the age of 73. The old man in the painting is dressed in cloth, standing sideways with a staff, with a firm posture and a detached look. His head painting is more realistic and has the characteristics of portrait painting. With thick long beard, thin hair braid, hale and bright eyes, he vividly depicts Jinnong’s stubborn and arrogant personality
The figure in the picture does not need to be similar in shape, but is extremely exaggerated and has a comic meaning. This is a portrait of a literati painter. The painter sketched the image of the characters with the scorched ink. The lines were crude and simple. They were born out of the “blue leaf painting” of Ma He in the Southern Song Dynasty. Together with the “lacquered book” of the title and poems, they reflected the style of crude and refined birth.
