Hua Yan is a folk painter who lived in Hangzhou and met scholars from eastern Zhejiang, such as Li E and Wu Shilun. Most of these friends are scholars who do not admire honor and wealth and are content with poverty. Under their influence, Hua Yan devotes himself to poetry, calligraphy and painting, and has won the reputation of “three wonders of poetry, calligraphy and painting”. In order to make a living, he had experienced an official career, but witnessed all kinds of grievances in the officialdom, and finally gave up his official career. He traveled between Hangzhou and Yangzhou to sell paintings for a living, and met painters such as “Yangzhou Eight Monsters”. He died at the age of 75. Hua Yan was poor all his life. In his paintings, he used “brush to brush away the dust of the world” to express his beautiful feelings of nature wholeheartedly. He has traveled a lot and has a broad vision, which many painters can’t match. This picture is an impromptu work. It depicts Hua Yan’s delight in traveling to Linquan in the summer, wearing a summer shirt and half open. He leaned against the stone, crossed his knees, and sat beside the spring. His left hand twitched his beard, and his right hand stroked the stone. The mountains and rocks behind me are towering, and the dark blue ancient vines are winding around the mountains. The waterfalls in the distance fall down from the rocks and converge into a river. Reading his poems makes people feel the author’s love for nature and detachment from dirt. The figure portraits in the picture are realistic and have a sense of freehand brushwork. The shape is slightly exaggerated, which is similar to other figure paintings of the author, such as the Snow in Tianshan Mountain (collected by the Beijing Palace Museum).
