The signature: “Written by Xishan Huaguan.” The seal is “Huaguan Calligraphy and Painting”. At the top right, Yu Shiling wrote himself: “The picture of Shu water. It was Xinhai at the age of, and the picture was taken at the age of thirty-six. Once upon a time, the wind and wood were sad, and the scene in the picture was too remote to trace. Looking at the picture, I could not help crying, and I looked at it with great admiration. I could not bear to repeat the painting of that year, and the sideburns were no longer like silk. Shu water was still holding its head, and asked you where to visit the court. When Jiaqing was in the summer of Renxu, Yu Shiling wrote himself in the official house of Wanjiang.”
The white seal of “Shiling” was sealed “Yutian” Zhu Wenyin
“Xinhai” is the fifty-sixth year of Qianlong’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1791), and “Renxu” is the seventh year of Jiaqing’s reign (1802)
Yu Shiling (1756-1839 or so), who was born along Gaohu Lake in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province, was named Matsuda and lotus root. His family is poor, and he has held micro posts in Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhili successively, famous for his filial piety
From Yu Shiling’s ink inscription on the picture, we know that he has a deep friendship with Huaguan. This picture was painted by Huaguan when he was 36 years old. As a portrait painting, Huaguan did not paint the subject as the standard image style of sitting upright, but put the subject in the environment of daily life, and painted the scene of him in a single coat, walking on grass shoes, carrying a bag of water on his shoulder and rushing on the road in the snow and ice. Shu water originally refers to beans and water, which means simple food, and later extended to the support of the younger generation to the elders. In the picture, the remote mountains, near water and slope fields use the expression technique of “limitless in limitlessness, and no painting can create a wonderful scene”. With the light ink and light stains without revealing the brush marks, the bleak air of the painting suddenly comes into being, which not only accurately shows the harsh weather environment in cold winter, but also implies the noble character of the Lord who is devoted to filial piety to his parents under the harsh living conditions. The face of the figure is first tinted with light color, and then the eyebrows and eyes are painted with heavy ink, which vividly displays the wise attitude of the image subject, showing the author’s strong portrait skills.
