[Fan Page of Hu Xi’s Painting of Fishing Alone in the Han River]

Fan Page of the Painting of Fishing Alone in the Han River, Qing Dynasty, Hu Xi’s painting, gold paper, color setting, 17.8 cm vertically and 50.3 cm horizontally
The fan page has its own title: “Five brothers of Ziying wrote a picture of fishing alone in the Han River under Hu Sanqiao.”
This picture depicts the poetic meaning of Liu Zongyuan’s “Snow on the River” in Tang Dynasty: “Birds fly away from thousands of mountains, and people disappear from thousands of paths. A lone boat, a coir raincoat, catches the snow on the cold river alone.” In order to express the scene of snow, the author specially coated the river, coir raincoat, a bamboo hat, and bamboo leaves with white powder. The white color not only implies snow, but also enhances the cool mood of the picture, which corresponds to the elegant character of the fisherman who enjoys himself. The painting is meticulous, as Wu Changshuo commented: “The painting is as fine as hair, and the pen is sharp”
