Box type. Carved red paint pattern. Covering the three kinds of brocade patterns of heaven, earth and water, it carved a poetic picture of Du Fu’s seven-character quatrains. The box wall is carved with peony, camellia, pomegranate, chrysanthemum, rose and other flowers on the yellow lacquer ground. The bottom is painted with black paint, and there is a gold filled “Ming Yongle Year System” carved by posterity on the edge
Du Fu was a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty, and was honored as the “Sage of Poetry” by later generations. This box depicts the third of the four quatrains written by Du Fu when he returned to the Chengdu Thatched Cottage in the early spring of the second year of Guangde (764): “Two orioles sing in the green willows, and a row of egrets go up to the sky. The window contains the autumn snow in the western mountains, and the door berths the Dongwu Wanli boat.”
