[Chen Hongshou’s Hairpin in the Sheng’an]

The shaft of the Hairpin in the Sheng’an, painted by Chen Hongshou in the Ming Dynasty, silk, colored, 143.5 cm in length and 61.5 cm in width
Yang Shen (1488-1559), a famous writer of the Ming Dynasty, was banished to Yunnan to ridicule the current politics. After being drunk, he painted his face with white powder, arranged flowers on his bun, and paraded with students and prostitutes in the city. This picture is the story. The figure in the picture is exaggerated in shape, vivid in appearance, round and smooth in line drawing, and the old tree in the background is withered and twisted, which further reflects the rebellious personality of the protagonist and shows the typical face of Chen Hongshou’s figure painting in the mature period.
