[Shen Zhou’s Farewell to Jingjiang]

The Farewell to Jingjiang Volume, made by Shen Zhou in the Ming Dynasty, paper edition, color setting, 28 cm vertically and 159 cm horizontally
The title of this picture is Wang Shimin’s official script, “Famous Sites Yihui”. This page is marked “Shen Zhou”. Seal “Kai Nan”. On the back is Shen Zhou’s postscript, which explains the reason for making this picture. There are also many postscripts in the Ming Dynasty’s Wenlin Book, including “Preface to the Appointment of Wu Xuzhou”, Zhu Yunming’s Book, “Preface to the Poems of Wu Gong, the governor of Xuzhou Prefecture”
According to the “Wu Mei Cun Collection”, this picture was made in March of 1911 in the fourth year of the reign of Emperor Hongzhi of the Ming Dynasty (1491). Shen Zhou was 65 years old. The picture depicts Shen Zhou and others seeing off Wu Yu, the governor of Xuzhou, to his post in Jingjiang. Wu Yu, a friend of Shen Zhou and the father-in-law of Wen Zhengming, was appointed to Xuzhou, which is now located in Yibin, Sichuan. In the picture, the master goes away in a boat, and the people bow to each other on the shore. At this time, the south of the Yangtze River is at a time of lush willows, lush peaches and boundless scenery. By depicting the beautiful scenery in the south of the Yangtze River, the author shows the feeling of parting, expressing his feelings in the scenery, and blending the feelings with the scenery. Yuanshan is painted with thick brush, thick and moist ink, and beautiful lines, reflecting Shen Zhou’s mature painting style.
