Ge Zhichuan Migration Map Axis, Yuan Dynasty, Wang Meng’s work, paper edition, color setting, vertical 139 cm, horizontal 58 cm
Taoism was popular in the Yuan Dynasty, and there were many paintings showing Taoism themes. This picture depicts the story of Ge Hong, a famous Taoist in the Jin Dynasty, who moved to Luofu Mountain with his family to practice Taoism. It intercepts a scene of Ge Hong on the way to move. The picture is dominated by mountains and rivers, with mountains and mountains, Danke green trees, waterfalls, streams and pools, and thatched cottages. It is a beautiful scene of mountains and forests in late autumn. The composition of the whole picture is complex, but the layers are well arranged. The waterfalls and mountain paths guide the viewer’s view layer by layer, making the picture full but not congested. In the picture, the mountain stones are painted with pure ink, with chapped, spot-dyed and ginseng. The dry and wet colors are used to each other, and the delineation is meticulous. The trees, figures and houses are painted with ochre, fuchsia, and cyan. The colors are stable and thick, with a very elegant charm. The whole picture is meticulous and beautiful, creating an ideal hermit environment. Although Wang Meng and Ge Hong are separated by ages and have different identities, they have similarities in many aspects: both of them are from famous families and want to join the world as officials, but both were abandoned by the world, and finally chose to live in seclusion. This picture is the most representative work reflecting Wang Meng’s thought of seclusion.
