This picture depicts the graceful posture of several green bamboos in the breeze and morning dew. Gu An strives to express the “pure and true” material state of bamboo in his creation. “Qing” refers to the inherent character of bamboo, which is neither humble nor overbearing, and is lofty and refined. It is the noble character pursued by the literati painters of the Yuan Dynasty; “True” refers to the appearance of thin, juicy bamboo, covered with frost and snow, emphasizing the realistic spirit of bamboo painting art. The bamboos painted in the picture are painted in light ink, and the leaves are painted in thick ink. The dark and light ink colors complement each other, strengthening the sense of hierarchy and expanding the space. The painting method of bamboo leaves follows the principle of “writing bamboo with eight methods” advocated by Zhao Mengfu. He skillfully starts and ends the brush with the “pressing” method of calligraphy. The root and tip of the leaves can see the sharp edge of the brush, and writes its scattered, scattered and rolling state. The lake stone in the picture is dotted with ink and color. It has exquisite beauty and also reflects the beauty of bamboo. The whole picture creates an elegant artistic conception of “infinite freshness” with simple pen and ink
This volume was originally collected in the Inner Palace of the Qing Dynasty. It was introduced to the public in the year of Xuantong, collected by Xu Shixue, and donated to the National Cutural Heritage Administration after liberation. The Cultural Relics Bureau allocated it to the Palace Museum on April 27, 1957.
