[Copper handle button “Tai Wei’s Seal”]
Copper handle button “Tai Wei’s Seal”, North Yuan Dynasty, printed face 10.0 × 10.0 cm, 9.5 cm high
Printed copper cast, handle button. The printing platform has three layers, which are folded up layer by layer. The printed text is in Phags-Pa font, in Zhuwen, which is read from the top left. The back of the seal is engraved with the words “Tai Wei’s seal. It was made by the Department of Rites in Zhongshu on November, the first year of Xuanguang.”
This is the official seal of the Northern Yuan regime. The position of the first lieutenant in the Yuan Dynasty can be seen in historical records during the reign of the Yuan regime in the Central Plains. This is printed with the “Xuanguang” model year, indicating that it was the official seal of the Northern Yuan regime when the Yuan regime was overthrown in the Central Plains and went north beyond the Great Wall. According to the Book of the Yuan Dynasty, the Tai Wei is a genuine product, printed in silver, with a pin button and a side length of three inches. This printing system is the same as that in the history, and only cast with copper, which may be related to the material and economic conditions of the Northern Yuan regime.
