“Zhang Chengzao” carved rhinoceros cloud pattern plate

[“Zhang Chengzao” rhinoceros cloud disk]

“Zhang Chengzao” rhinoceros cloud disk, yuan, 3.3 cm high, 19.2 cm caliber
The black paint on the wooden plate is carved with cloud patterns inside and outside. The paint is very thick, glittering and translucent, and the carving is round. Four layers of red paint are exposed on the dark and deep cutting edge section, which is the so-called “black line” in the “Painting Record”. The black paint on the bottom of the plate was impetuous, and it was obviously repainted. The four characters of “Qianlong Year System” were written in regular script at the center of the plate, which was added when the primer was painted. There are three words of “Zhang Chengzao” on the edge of the foot, which is Zhang Cheng’s usual signature method. The painting color and knife work of this plate are the same as those of the “Zhang Chengzao” rhinoceros moire box currently stored in the Anhui Provincial Museum. It is undoubtedly Zhang Cheng’s work. The original version should be covered when the primer is painted
Zhang Cheng is best known for making red carvings, and is renowned at home and abroad, but rhinoceros carvings are rare. From this unique rhinoceros carving disc, we can see that Zhang Cheng is not only a master of rhinoceros carving, but also a superb rhinoceros carving skill. This disc provides a reliable and exquisite example for studying the rhinoceros carving process of the Yuan Dynasty.
